Embodied carbon (EC) contributes a significant portion of the life cycle carbon footprint of the built environment. According to WWF, the construction sector is the second largest contributor of the carbon footprint in Hong Kong and 85% of the carbon footprint associated with the construction sector is embodied in imported goods and services. This study investigates the embodied carbon of locally used construction materials and develops the Embodied Carbon Of Construction Materials (ECO-CM) database for Hong Kong.

Localization of Other Database

Inventory of Carbon and Energy (ICE) developed by University of Bath in the United Kingdom is a widely used embodied carbon database for construction materials. As the data in the ICE database are based in UK, the data are used and adjusted by considering the local factors such as fuel mix and raw material sourcing. For each construction material, a mix of countries is considered. The life cycle boundary is also extended from “Cradle-to-Gate”, which is used in ICE, to “Cradle-to-Site” for this study.
