Embodied carbon (EC) contributes a significant portion of the life cycle carbon footprint of the built environment. According to WWF, the construction sector is the second largest contributor of the carbon footprint in Hong Kong and 85% of the carbon footprint associated with the construction sector is embodied in imported goods and services. This study investigates the embodied carbon of locally used construction materials and develops the Embodied Carbon Of Construction Materials (ECO-CM) database for Hong Kong.

The HKUST LCA Research Group

This is the website showing the most updated work related to a study on the life cycle carbon footprint of locally used construction materials in Hong Kong. At the end of this study, an embodied carbon database of construction materials will be developed. The database will help promote a low carbon construction industry by providing a basis for selection of green materials, development of carbon labels, and prediction and estimation of building facility carbon footprint.

We are now at the data collection stage. It will be of great help if your company can provide data for our research. All the information provided will be used for academic purposes only and will be kept strictly confidential to our utmost. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in the study.
